Youth Criminal Justice Act Review 2008


In October 2007, the Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada announced a review of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) would be conducted in 2008.

Based on five years of experience with the YCJA, the purpose of the review is to identify areas of concern.

Federal-Provincial Territorial Minister Meeting

As a first step in the review, the Minister of Justice met with his federal, provincial and territorial counterparts on February 15, 2008 to discuss the review of the YCJA. The views of the provinces and territories are important because they play a key role in administering the YCJA. [More...]

Recent amendments to the YCJA

On November 19, 2007, the Government introduced to amend the YCJA to include deterrence and denunciation as principles of sentencing and to strengthen provisions relating to pre-trial detention. The Bill is currently before the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights.  [More...]
