A series of round-table discussions was held to lay the groundwork for a collaborative, multi-disciplined approach to youth justice. These round-table discussions were convened with key experts and front-line workers from the education, mental health, voluntary and social services organizations, arts and recreation, and child advocacy sectors, and with youth and representatives of National Associations Active in Criminal Justice. Separate discussions were also held on racially motivated youth crime and on issues faced by families dealing with youth in conflict with the law.
The goal was to gather expert advice and give participants an opportunity to exchange views and generate possible solutions. Each discussion examined how the sector could prevent youth crime, deal with youth who have committed offences, and support the reintegration and rehabilitation of young people who offend. Participants explored the challenges, opportunities and ways in which sectors can work together toward understanding the social problems of youth and developing the tools and approaches to help young people in the community.
