Justice Partnership and Innovation Program

Access to Justice for Marginalized Populations

The Department of Justice is committed to supporting the Minister of Justice in working to ensure that Canada is a just and law-abiding society with an accessible, efficient and fair system of justice.

Some Canadians, for a variety of reasons, become marginalized and experience increased barriers to receiving a just outcome in the justice system. Funding is available, for initiatives that are relevant to sustaining the principle of equality before the law, through the Justice Partnership and Innovation Program for projects that explore:

  • race based issues in the justice system, including addressing the overrepresentation of racialized groups and Aboriginal persons, in the justice system both as victims and perpetrators, by undertaking research and consultations, and by developing projects that would test approaches or models of intervention or that develop and deliver public legal education and information activities.

  • Factors that lead to the marginalization of individuals who are over represented in the justice system, including the presence of a cognitive impairment (such as FASD, mental illness etc.) that may impact the proportionate response such individuals receive.

  • Innovative responses that will assist marginalized people in achieving an efficient and fair system of justice.
