The Programs Branch works closely with the Nunavut government to establish innovative approaches to the delivery of justice in Nunavut communities. Project funding available under the Nunavut Initiative is dedicated to projects that help support the government of Canada's statutory obligation to establish the Government of Nunavut and to support the establishment of an effective justice delivery system that recognizes Nunavut's realities and needs in cultural, social and geographic terms.
Some activities that support project funding may include:
- Projects that seek to assist the territory in identifying possible justice solutions for their citizens and infrastructures for justice services and programs;
- Feasibility studies that explore the development and implementation of justice services and programs;
- Projects that assist in the identification of solutions to justice challenges in Nunavut;
- The development, testing, implementation, and evaluation of appropriate justice approaches that reflect the geographical, cultural and linguistic realities of Nunavut; and,
- Training which develops and furthers justice expertise within communities.
For fiscal year 2002/2003, five project proposals were received. These projects included the following:
- Akitsiraq Law School Society - Law program delivered in Iqaluit for Inuit students
- Carleton University - University Access and Career Development
- Pulaarvik Friendship Centre - Spousal Abuse Program in Rankin Inlet
- Nunavut Legal Services Board - Information Technology (IT) System
- Community Capacity Building Activities- Cape Dorset
5 projects were approved for funding. Organizations approved for funding included: 2 non-profit community organization, 2 provincial or territorial governments and 1 Canadian institution of education.
Funded projects included: 5 pilot projects.
The Fund provided a total of $397,455 to these projects.
