Regional Coordinators responsible for the implementation of Section 41 of the OLA


Role

The coordinators are accountable for the implementation of Section 41 of the Official Languages Act on behalf of the Regional Director.

Within his/her region or province/territory, the regional coordinator :

  • Maintains close ties with the official language minority communities (OLMC) and with regional coordinators of other federal institutions working in the same province, territory or region;
  • Provides the national coordinator with activities related to Section 41;
  • Establishes a working relationship with other members of the Network;
  • Coordinates, for his region, the Departmental Action Plan and prepares the Status Report and the necessary follow-ups;
  • Works closely with regional programs and policy representatives in order to enhance the vitality and the development of the official language minority communities;
  • Promotes awareness to Regional Program Consultants and Regional Directors on the Department's mandate to contribute to the development and support of the Official Language Minority Communities;
  • Participates in monthly conference calls with the departmental national coordinators and Team 41 (Bureau de la Francophonie, Justice en langues officielles et Dualisme juridique) on issues regarding the implementation of Section 41;
  • Participates in the annual meeting of the departmental (national and regional) coordinators responsible for the implementation of Section 41 of the OLA;
  • Participates on the Regional Interdepartmental Committee of Canadian Heritage with Official Language Minority Communities in order to better understand their needs and priorities;

Keys to Success

  1. Have bilingual coordinators in the regions.
  2. Have a good understanding of Justice Canada's programs and initiatives in general.
  3. Have good knowledge of the priorities of the Official Language Minority Communities in your provinces-territories.
  4. Have good working relationships with the Regional Program Consultants.
  5. Obtain the commitment and support of senior management in order to ensure full participation in the development of the official-language minority communities.
  6. Work as a team and look for support from your colleagues and share the information.
