The Advisory Committee — Justice in Official Languages (Advisory Committee) established in partnership with the legal community, official language minority communities and the Department of Justice Canada and reports to the Associate Deputy Minister of Justice.
Mandate
The Advisory Committee has a mandate to act as liaison between legal and official language minority communities stakeholders (represented by both Advisory Sub-Committees), and the Department of Justice. The activities of the Advisory Committee aim to promote the development and vitality of official language minority communities, and to improve access to justice for these communities.
Note
Matters under the jurisdiction of the Attorney General of Canada are not handled by the Advisory Committee.
Role
Under the chairmanship the Department of Justice Canada, the role of the Advisory Committee will be to:
oversee the creation of Sub-Committees (access to justice and section 41 of the Official Languages Act — Community component);
adopt the agenda and minutes of Committee meetings;
advise Sub-Committees on directions, approaches and anticipated outcomes;
dispense advice, make recommendations and provide feedback on ideas and proposals submitted by Sub-Committees;
provide a forum to allow a complete update of the Multi-Year Action Plan to help the Department discharge its responsibilities under part VII of the OLA;
facilitate consultation between all stakeholders: communities, lawyers and the Department of Justice Canada.
