Ottawa, June 19, 2008 – The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:
The Honourable Raymond P. Whalen, a partner with Smith Coffey Whalen in St. John’s, Newfoundland is appointed a Judge of the Trial Division of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador. Mr. Justice Whalen is replacing Madam Justice K.J. Goulding (Gander) who is to replace Mr. Justice A. Schwartz in Grand-Falls Windsor.
Mr. Justice Whalen received a Bachelor of Arts from Memorial University in 1972, a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1973 and a Bachelor of Law from the University of New Brunswick in 1979. He was admitted to the Bar of Newfoundland in 1979. Mr. Justice Whalen has been a partner with Smith Coffey Whalen since 2006. Mr. Justice Whalen was an associate/partner with White Ottenheimer & Baker from 1979 to 2000. Mr. Justice Whalen has developed an expertise in corporate, commercial and finance law. In addition, he has been a member of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador and a member of the Canadian Bar Association since 1979.
This appointment is effective immediately.
